The Need
Baltimore’s homelessness situation is on an upward trend. In
eight years, the homeless population swelled from 2,681 in 2005 to 4,088 in 2011, an increase of 1,407 individuals. Particularly
concerning is the change from the last census years. The rate of homelessness increased from 13.9% (2007 to 2009) to 19.6% (2009 to 2011).
More than half (56%) of sheltered homeless individuals in the 2011 census were single adults. Of this group, 77.1% were men, and 22.8% were women. Comparatively, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development reported that in the national homeless population, 65.3% of those who seek
residential assistance are male.

Earl's Place is a transitional housing program providing long-term (up to two years) of housing and supportive services to seventeen men at a time.
Our clients are provided with a permanent address and a place to receive mail and phone calls. Most importantly, they have a place to call home, where concerns such as having a clean, safe place to sleep, shower, and keep their belongings is alleviated. For some this is the first time they have had a key of their own.
The program promotes independence and acquisition of skills using a model that emphasizes individual responsibility and accountability. Once accepted into the program, each man is provided with intensive case management to determine both short and long-term goals, as well as to ensure access to community services including health care, education, and job training.
Ultimately, the residents are assisted in obtaining affordable, permanent housing. One year of formal aftercare is provided to help ensure success.
Residents who successfully complete the program are Visionaries. Read about one man's journey in the CHHSM storybank. |
Who We Are
United Ministries, a faith and community-based 501(c) (3)
nonprofit, was incorporated in 1993 and is a recognized mission of the United
Church of Christ. This project was the vision of Rev.
Eugene Bartell, former pastor of First United Evangelical United Church of
Christ and several persons who volunteered at The Supper Club, a feeding program
at the church. The name United Ministries was chosen to exemplify a broad-based community organization consisting of both secular and ecumenical groups, which is reflected in its active welcome of partnership with congregations and individuals of any or no religious persuasion.
Earl’s Place, the first
project of United Ministries, opened in 1997 and is named for Earl Johnson, who, before his death was involved both as a client and a volunteer at The Supper Club. United Ministries, through
Earl's Place, provides housing and supportive services to men who are
homeless.
Baltimore United Congregations, Sheila is co-chair with Rev. Beth Cantrell, Pastor of Immanuel United Church of Christ in Catonsville, of Baltimore United Congregations (BUC). BUC is an interfaith, interdenominational group of individuals working together with the Stop Homelessness and Reduce Poverty (SHARP) coalition to end homelessness and educate congregations about homelessness and ways to help the poor and marginalized who knock on our doors.
A HOME. A COMMUNITY. A CHANCE.

United Ministries is a member agency of The Council for Health and Human Service Ministries (CHHSM) of the United Church of Christ. |
